Allan grew up with photography in his blood. Both his father and brother (pictured above with Allan and his first camera) were cinematographers and by the time he was 10 years old he had a full darkroom set up in his grandmother’s hall closet. By the age of 17 Allan was working full time in the film production business and spent the next 25 years as a photographer and filmmaker in his native Toronto. He has been the recipient of both national and international awards and both as a photographer and as a director and editor of TV commercials. In 1992 he was the recipient of the Gold Bessie, awarded for the best TV spot in Canada.
Since 2015 Allan has owned and operated Allan Mestel Photography, a commercial and portrait photography business in Sarasota, Florida where he lives with his wife and two small children. Allan’s personal projects are showcased here. His commercial work can be seen at www.mestelphoto.com.
About the site
The images collected here are my personal favorites and best represent my vision and passions as a photographer. Some of the images are taken directly from my commercial portrait work, but most are projects I have undertaken simply because the concept or subject resonated with me..
Included are a number of portrait series, notably ‘Homelessness in Focus’, a 3 year project to document and humanize the homeless community in Southwest Florida. The foundational philosophy that underpins this work is that every human life has equal value regardless of economic circumstances, homelessness, addiction, or mental illness.
Additionally I have include photojournalism and portrait series with individuals and groups I respect and admire mostly because of the work they are doing in service of bringing sanity and healing to a troubled world.
I encourage anyone to reach out to me if they wish to engage in dialogue about this work or if they have suggestions or ideas for future projects consistent with the themes represented here. I can be reached at email@example.com.
